Lightning Rods Big-Block mid drive kit

The original Lightning Rods kit was the most powerful mid drive available when we wrote about it back in December of 2014. But now, he has produced an even more powerful kit that he is calling his “big block”. It is wide enough that it fits between the pedals on extra-wide bottom brackets, like those found on some downhill bikes, the recently popular fatbikes, some cargobikes, and the Qulbix Raptor.     You can find our article on the original

Moped Rims and Tires for Hot Rod Hubmotors

If you want to rock a ton of amps in a hot-rod hubmotor street monster for the kind of sweet hard acceleration that can embarrass an expensive sports car, the latest trend is to mount the hubbie into a rear wheel that uses Moped rims and tires. This article will show you why you want this, and what parts are being used right now by garage builders to make this happen. ____________________________________________ Isn’t a moped just a light motorcycle? The On/Off Switch…the Nemesis of the DIY Electric Biker

As the editor of electricbike.com, I have ridden a massive amount of electric bikes both home-built and commercial ebikes. Here is a weird stat: 100 percent of the 100 or so commercially available ebikes I have ridden have an on and off switch…and I would estimate only 30 percent of  the 100 or so DIY ebikes I have ridden have an on/off switch. Nowhere is the technology gap seen more in DIY  electric bikes than the ebike on and off switch,

Custom Build Gallery, Matts twin-Astro Motoped

This is an over-the-top custom electric bicycle system from DaVinci Drive Systems on a Motoped frame. I first became aware of the very interesting Motoped company about a couple of years ago. The Motoped has been designed to use a 50cc gasoline engine, and it clearly looks like a light off-road motorcycle. However, it was also designed from the beginning to be as light as possible, and to have pedals for human input. As a result, it uses a lot

One Hour Electric Bike Conversion; Installing a Kit

Editor Note: This is a repost of an important story we did back in our early days which shows a Mac geared motor kit  being installed in one hour. If you have been considering installing a hub motor on your bike, but hesitate because of the time and complexity involved in converting it…check out “The One Hour Electric Bike Conversion Procedure“. This Electric Bike conversion procedure is designed to be simple and quick. The entire process is performed in about an hour.

Ebike Wiring…Defining the Rats-Nest

Editor note: Part 2 of a 4 part series on the wiring of DIY ebikes Make no mistake about it…there is no great deal of expertise in building a drive system for an electric bike. It is not rocket science….it is not even as hard as tuning a car science. DIY ebikes have an array of wires that can quickly and often times turn into a rats-nest if the builder is not thoughtful. Wires are a messy problem. Where as the

The 3 Critical Components: Motor, Controller, and Battery

Hot-rodding an ebike is not as simple as some people might think. That is because you need to consider three critical interlinked components when hot-rodding, and if you don’t change all three components, your ebike probably won’t go any faster, and in fact might go slower or roast something. Think of it as the electric bike bottle neck…if one of your components can’t hold up to the  extra power?…you’re not going anywhere faster, and…you might end up in the embarrassing

A Home-Built Ebike Battery Pack from 18650 Cells

Editor Note: Affordable and powerful 18650 battery cells are the hottest thing in the DIY electric bike revolution (most well-known from their use in cordless tools). Bike builders everywhere are discovering that clustering many 18650s together are an effective way to build not only an affordable pack, but one with unbeatable performance and safety. Note that even though they are safer than soft pouch LiPos (popular with RC enthusiasts), it is still a lithium chemistry, which is always dangerous when

Custom Build Gallery, Zlatko’s CBM

Back in December of 2013, we wrote about a wonderful 2WD board-tracker style of E-bike that was made in Croatia by a very skilled designer and engineer named Zlatko Vidic. He named his creation the “Mental Manno“. Now, he and two of his friends are making another style of E-bike that is designed around the monster Cromotor rear hub. This is a street E-bike, and by using a rear hub, the entire frame is then free to hold the maximum volume
