Ebike Wiring…Defining the Rats-Nest

Editor note: Part 2 of a 4 part series on the wiring of DIY ebikes Make no mistake about it…there is no great deal of expertise in building a drive system for an electric bike. It is not rocket science….it is not even as hard as tuning a car science. DIY ebikes have an array of wires that can quickly and often times turn into a rats-nest if the builder is not thoughtful. Wires are a messy problem. Where as the

The 3 Critical Components: Motor, Controller, and Battery

Hot-rodding an ebike is not as simple as some people might think. That is because you need to consider three critical interlinked components when hot-rodding, and if you don’t change all three components, your ebike probably won’t go any faster, and in fact might go slower or roast something. Think of it as the electric bike bottle neck…if one of your components can’t hold up to the  extra power?…you’re not going anywhere faster, and…you might end up in the embarrassing

A Home-Built Ebike Battery Pack from 18650 Cells

Editor Note: Affordable and powerful 18650 battery cells are the hottest thing in the DIY electric bike revolution (most well-known from their use in cordless tools). Bike builders everywhere are discovering that clustering many 18650s together are an effective way to build not only an affordable pack, but one with unbeatable performance and safety. Note that even though they are safer than soft pouch LiPos (popular with RC enthusiasts), it is still a lithium chemistry, which is always dangerous when

Custom Build Gallery, Zlatko’s CBM

Back in December of 2013, we wrote about a wonderful 2WD board-tracker style of E-bike that was made in Croatia by a very skilled designer and engineer named Zlatko Vidic. He named his creation the “Mental Manno“. Now, he and two of his friends are making another style of E-bike that is designed around the monster Cromotor rear hub. This is a street E-bike, and by using a rear hub, the entire frame is then free to hold the maximum volume

Lightning Rods 2800W mid drive kit

This is the most powerful production mid drive kit that you can run through the bikes gears, and the big surprise is how quiet it is. We bought the first two production kits before they were even produced. I say that up front to give you an idea of how we feel about this particular mid drive kit. There is quite simply no other kit that you can add to your bike that comes close to what this kit

Custom Build Gallery, Hannes’ crossbreak-style mid-drive Kona

This mid-drive build features an innovative configuration that makes it easier for a builder to pedal along with the motor if you need to ride at speeds above 30-MPH (48-km/h). It was built by a man named Hannes in Austria (endless-sphere.com username: izeman), and the very professional look and performance of this E-bike is the result of a great deal of research and customization. A mid drive that powers the bottom bracket’s crankset has proven to be a useful way

Custom Build Gallery, Matt’s 20-inch Astro Hooligan

Matt Shumaker really made a name for himself a few years ago by developing high performance electric bikes that used the high-end Astro Flight RC motors. The distinctive feature of his drives were the chunks of billet aluminum that were cut into beautiful and well-designed brackets, which mounted these motors to various bicycle frames. You can see his monster yellow trike here. Matt had calculated out a lot of variables and optional configurations during the first year he was developing

Custom Build Gallery, Deecanios Astro mid drive

This mid drive build was started way back in 2008, but…it was so ahead of it’s time, it is still awesome by todays standards. Deecanio is the member-name of an endless-sphere.com builder from the UK who created this historic milestone E-bike. He decided he wanted something completely new and cutting edge. He had read about how the components for Radio-Controlled (RC) aircraft models had grown large enough that they were beginning to be used on electric bikes. RC components can
