DIY Ebike Wiring…Defining the Rats-Nest

Editor note: Part 2 of a 4 part series on the wiring of DIY ebikes DIY ebikes have an array of wires that can quickly and often times turn into a rat nest if the builder is not thoughtful.  Wires are a messy problem. Peugeot eDL-132, exotic French concept E-bike

The Peugeot eDL-132 mid-drive electric bicycle is a gorgeous example of a car company that wants to get some publicity with the growing trend of cars and motorcycles adding an electric-drive to their model line. Over the past decade, it has been rare for me to see any evidence of a Peugeot outside of France and the European Union (EU), but two years ago, the French company Peugeot decided to start making some bold moves, which would be needed if

Lightning Rods 2800W mid drive kit

This is the most powerful production mid drive kit that you can run through the bikes gears, and the big surprise is how quiet it is. We bought the first two production kits before they were even produced. I say that up front to give you an idea of how we feel about this particular mid drive kit. There is quite simply no other kit that you can add to your bike that comes close to what this kit can

Piaggio’s new mid drive

The name of Piaggio is not well-known in North America, but they are a well-established brand in Europe. This Iconic Italian company has been slow to commit to a significant electric bike, but their history shows that they are serious about this new product. They revealed this new model on the 4th of November at the EICMA 72nd International Motorcycle Exhibition in Milan, Italy. ____________________________________________________ The History of Piaggio After the devastation of WWII, Piaggio switched from producing aircraft parts to scooters,

Siemprenbici, off-road mid drives from Spain

This E-bike is designed to be very light, and every design choice that was made has been carefully considered to ensure that the final product remained very light. This is a very strong full-suspension frame that is made from carbon fiber, so there is no way to make something like this affordable…it is a premium product that will be expensive. The drive system provides a modest 600W of assistance. Most countries in the European Union (EU) have a 250W power

Yamaha YPJ-01, a light mid-drive road bike

Yamaha was one of the early adopters of electric bikes. In fact, they invented the term “PAS” in 1993, which stands for Pedal Assist System. This is where the rider doesn’t use a hand-throttle, but by simply pedaling with your feet, the bike will add some power. Depending on the level of power-assist you dial-in, you can be going very fast with almost no physical strain.     PAS systems are not only popular in many parts of the world,

Qoros eBIQE, Exotic Concept E-Bike

Qoros has revealed a new high-performance electric bike, and if it looks vaguely similar to the GreyP G-12, there is a reason for that. We haven’t had a chance to write about the GreyP E-bike yet, but the eBIQE is breaking news right now (that is related to the GreyP), so we will tell you about the eBIQE first. We wrote about the Greyborg Warp Builder’s frame kit a few months ago, and during that research, we became familiar with

BMW announces a new E-bike for 2014

BMW produced 200 small folding electric bikes in 2012 as part of a public relations campaign about their new electric concept car, the i3. You could fit two of the folding i-Pedelecs in the back of the i3, with the idea that you could drive the i3 from your home to a car-park, and then ride the i-Pedelecs the final few miles to work, to the train station, or to a weekend picnic.     The i-Pedelec was well-designed, but

Qulbix Raptor, Offroad Hot Rod Electric Bike

The Qulbix Raptor is a high-performance E-bike frame that is made to allow a very large battery pack, and a very high-powered rear hub-motor. We’ve been wanting to write about the Raptor for some time, and since they just recently changed their company name from Torque to Qulbix, that makes this month a good time to finally delve into the details. Note: the “Qulbix” name was developed to have something that is very different than any other name out there.
