I stumbled across this story today, and I as surprised that I hadn’t seen more about it in the media. Back in July of 2013 (four months ago) Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG (the parent corporation of Mercedes Benz) personally delivered a gift to the very popular Pope Francis…a Daimler Smart E-bike.
I am not Catholic, but I recognize that the Catholic church is pretty huge, and the newest Pope is becoming popular with the common man. He has rejected expensive personal luxury items that previous popes had been criticized over, and has been very vocal about encouraging the people of the world to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.
The BionX motor and sine-wave controller should allow Pope Francis to glide around the Vatican grounds very quietly.
Publicity for ebikes is a good thing, so maybe this will get more people thinking about them. I am still surprised when I occasionally find someone who doesn’t even know that E-bikes exist…
