Back in LA…building an ebike on a budget

April 24, 2012

I am back in LA and therefore doing a lot less riding than I was a week ago when in San Francisco, but the good news is I’m doing much more E-bike writing. ūüôā

Last night was a great exercise sourcing together the components necessary to build a 30mph / 20-mile range $1000 E-bike. I got in a forum argument with some guys and they thought it was not plausible.  I spent the evening proving on paper that it was in fact possible.

I damn near talked myself into building that $1k bike yesterday, ordering all components and then going for it…but I already have enough E-bikes laying around, and f0r sure I do not want to store another one.

But I do think that it would be cool to have a $1000 bench-mark bike around to compare against commercially available bikes when I test them…it would be cool if the $1k bike beat the pants off some $8k¬†commercially¬†available ebikes which I think it would.

Check out the  $1000 30mph / 2o-mile range ebike story here:

Also published my favorite story ever on this site which is the Specialized Super Charged Racer.  That is one nice ebike.

Eric has been involved in the electric bike industry since 2002 when he started a 6000 square foot brick and mortar Electric Bike store in downtown San Francisco. He is a true believer that small electric vehicles can change the way we operate and the way we think.
